Know the window and start with this year's coverage
Medicare's annual Open Enrollment runs from October 15 through December 7, 2026. A change made during that window generally takes effect January 1, 2027. You can review 2027 plans now, even though the enrollment window has not opened. Begin with the Annual Notice of Change and Evidence of Coverage from your current plan. Those documents show how its costs, benefits, and rules will change next year. Staying enrolled may be reasonable if the plan still fits, but automatic renewal is not a substitute for checking the details that matter to you.
Compare the full year, not just the monthly premium
A lower premium does not necessarily mean a lower total cost. Put the premium beside the deductible, copays, coinsurance, and the likely cost of the care and medicines you use. Medicare's plan comparison tool lets you enter prescriptions and pharmacies to estimate plan costs. Check each medicine's coverage, any restrictions, and the price at the pharmacy you actually use. Recheck if a drug, dose, or pharmacy has changed. National average premiums announced by CMS for 2027 are projections across many plans, not a quote for your coverage or a promise about your own cost.
Check doctors, facilities, and access rules
If you are considering Medicare Advantage, confirm whether the doctors, specialists, hospitals, and pharmacies you expect to use are in the plan's network for 2027. Ask the plan and providers directly when a particular relationship is important, since directories and contracts can change. Compare referrals, prior authorization rules, and costs for out-of-network care where applicable. A plan with appealing extras can still be a poor fit if essential care is harder or more expensive to obtain. If you use Original Medicare with a separate drug plan, compare the drug coverage separately rather than assuming a medical coverage decision answers both questions.
Understand the switch before giving up existing coverage
Open Enrollment allows eligible people to switch between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage, as well as change Medicare drug plans. The ability to buy a Medigap policy when moving from Medicare Advantage back to Original Medicare is a separate issue. Federal guaranteed issue rights apply only in particular circumstances, and state rules may add protections. Medicare cautions that a person may not be able to get the same Medigap policy back after dropping it. Check the applicable rights and timing with Medicare, the insurer, or your State Health Insurance Assistance Program before ending coverage you may want to keep. Also check with an employer or union benefits administrator before a change that could affect other coverage.
What this may mean for your plan
Build a one-page comparison for 2027: expected premiums, likely prescription costs, important doctors and facilities, your preferred pharmacy, and any coverage rules that could affect care. Put the December 7 enrollment deadline and January 1 effective date on the same calendar as your retirement cash-flow review. Healthcare costs are one part of a broader plan that may also include income, taxes, and reserves. If you would like to connect a Medicare coverage decision with those broader financial goals, KWIX Planning & Wealth invites you to schedule a call.
